At The Good Shepherd Academy, students learn to care for God's creation with their own hands. The Gardening Club is part of the Life Sciences curriculum for kindergarten through second grade and is also offered as an extracurricular activity for all grade levels.
Students work in six raised planter beds in a dedicated garden adjacent to the school. There they plant seeds, tend and water their crops, observe how plants grow, and harvest what they have grown.
Classroom instruction covers the science behind the work: the parts of a plant, what plants need to grow, life cycles, pollination, and the role of soil and water. Students keep garden journals, sketching and recording what they observe, which builds habits of careful attention.
The Fall 2026 planting includes vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, sugar snap peas, onions, garlic, beets, Swiss chard, and carrots), berries (strawberries and blueberries), flowers (calendula, violas, and nasturtiums), and herbs (cilantro and chives).
Students will also create and maintain the Garden of the Good Shepherd, located on the lawn beside the school's main entrance. This garden will honor Christ the Good Shepherd and serve as a beautiful reflection of TGSA's flourishing Catholic culture.
